…you will probably get worse.
The Pirates are proving that.
The Pirates made no improvements at the trade deadline, and no improvements since. They didn’t get better.
Now, they’re getting worse.
LF Starling Marte went on the 15-day disabled list. The Pirates were previously weak in right field, using a rotating cast of jobronis at that position.
Now, with Marte out, left field stinks, too. Jose Tabata played LF and Andrew Lambo RF in yesterday’s 4-0 loss at San Francisco.
It’s one thing to not have anybody to duplicate what Marte does.
It’s another to not have anybody that can even come close.
If the Pirates didn’t feel compelled to add a match-winner, they should have at least added some depth.
Instead, they added nobody.
But that’s no big deal. Not when it’s always been about money.
The Pirates are 11-12 in August. Treading water. That won’t win the NL Central. But it will get the Pirates in the playoffs.
The home stretch is a big test for Clint Hurdle.
Hurdle has proven he can be a good manager from April through July. But he’s still got to prove he can finish.
The bar has been raised. A winning season isn’t good enough. I’m not even sure losing the wild-card game would be good enough.
