This coming Monday night, LB James Harrison plays against the Steelers for the first time. Harrison, it’s said, will be looking for revenge.
But Harrison shouldn’t be mad at the Steelers. Harrison should be mad at himself. Harrison should kick his own ass.
If Harrison had taken a 30 per cent pay decrease, he could have stayed in Pittsburgh. He could have made back most of the money cut via bonuses. But pride chased Harrison to Cincinnati, where he makes far less than the Steelers offered.
Harrison was scheduled to make $6.5m with the Steelers this year. The Steelers would have been willing to pay him $4.5m.
Instead, Harrison went to Cincinnati, where his entire two-year deal is worth $4.45m, with only the $1.2m signing bonus guaranteed.
That’s a stupid move by a stupid man who is an ESPN special waiting to happen. “Broke 2.”
It’s a business. Pride shouldn’t enter into it. So many football players go bankrupt because they just refuse to understand that.
Yinzer Nation romanticizes its heroes. But there is nothing noble about James Harrison. He’s a crude, mean-spirited, sadistic jerk. The Steelers might be headed for a disastrous season. But the team and city are well rid of Harrison.
Don't believe me? Check out this clip of Harrison from HBO's "Hard Knocks." A**HOLE. Once properly insulted and intimidated, HBO made Harrison seem noble.
